Google Sites Fail Google's Own PageSpeed

Not sure if this is the right place for my question.

I was thinking about using Google Sites. Now, that it's a part of the paid Google Workspace, I was expecting Google Sites to be a half baked product at least.

I found a site that is showcased by Google. It's made by Google's own software. Hosted on Google's own servers.Run Google's own test which is very important as per Google. Here's the result
Sylvania Schools
[sites.google.com...]
[sylvaniaschools.org...]
Mobile score 19 out of 100.

Can it go any lower? What gives?

Looking at your post history, I see eight years ago you asked about Google sites and were told to use a different option because it is not the best. That advice is still accurate.

Taking a nonprofit school site that doesn't care about SEO to demonstrate how bad Google Sites performs isn't that big a reveal. I'd wager if someone using Google Sites actually cared about SEO & page speed they could improve those page insight scores. But anyone who actually cares about SEO would also know that they shouldn't be using Google Sites. It is a good entry-level option for people that don't know how to build websites and want something for free.

Not sure how/why SEO affects the PageSpeed test. Anyway, that was Google's showcase, not just any non-profit.

In 8 years things changed. So has Google Sites. Google turned Google Sites into a page builder with virtually no learning curve, as you can see on the Sylvania example. As for the on-site SEO, at least Google Sites places H tags automatically. :)

PageSpeed might be low if the host doesn't use cache. Would interesting to know if Google uses cache for "non-profits". Or if it uses cache for paid Workspace sites.

You would think Google would follow their own best practices and have sites built with there tools at least have a passing grade, but then again time and time again they only choose to follow it when it suits there own needs.

Funny how the first link actual has a few errors on it including one for Google Maps which says:

"This map is no longer available due to a violation of our Terms of Service and/or policies."

I'm not sure that people who resort to such tools to get to a website have the skills to maneuver through any kind of optimization. Google Sites are not where I'd expect to find top compliance or optimization skills. Sort of feels like laughing at the Special Olympics.

Nice catch.

And the sites on both links look quite differently. I wouldn't be surprised if the real site is no longer made with and hosted on Google Sites after all.
