I used to have a website that I could use to check the PR ranking of a website before deciding whether to post there or not. But I have since lost that link.

Is there a site/service that can be recommended to check the PR ranking of any nominated website?

Any tool that claims to show Google PR is a bad, inaccurate, & outdated tool. I'd guess you might have lost the link because the site was turned off.

A little history refresher - Google never revealed the real Google pagerank data. They used to display a snapshot of this information in the Google toolbar aka TBPR but that stopped many, many years ago.

When Google stopped sharing their out-of-date TBPR snapshot it led to some companies creating their own rankings (like domain rank etc) and selling access to it. Google never uses these third-party rankings but still ignorant rookies pay for this information and blindly follow it. You can look at backlinks, alexa rankings, guesses from third-party tools but there is no simple tool that can accurately figure out the SEO value of a website from Google's POV.

Google's algo has evolved well beyond PR. Evolving beyond PR doesn't mean Google has totally abandoned PR. They likely still use PR as one of the hundreds of ranking signals. Probably best if we remember the principles of PR but pay more attention to other metrics.
