I have a site in the finance niche that got penalized back in May. I decided to invest some time and try to get the rankings back.
I've lost -80% of my rankings between may 3 - may 21 and then it slowly went down to a total of -90% as of today.

I have received another penalty in 2020 (also may) but I disavowed some links and the rankings came back.
This site is in the finance niche and I don't really have YMYL on the site other than an author bio.
I have no manual actions warnings this time (like I had in may 2020 when I disavowed the links).

Can somebody tell me how to recover from a YMYL penalty?

Hello,

Do you have any legitimate expertise in this niche? Because otherwise, it's dead, sorry. Finance, is a sensitive subject, so Google is trying to differentiate content written by authoritative experts, from content written by "others". Same for nice like health, diet, etc...

If you have a legitimate skill in this niche, then, you need to send signals to Google, so they can "trust" you. This involves clearly stating the author of the pages, and his background, (degrees, experiences). To show, why, the content can be trusted by readers.

In my view this isn't a "penalty".

Instead, google adjusted the signals that the algorithm uses to evaluate authority, trust and expertise. It was this adjustment of the signals that had the negative effects on your site's rankings. So you shouldn't call it a penalty.
