Though there is not change in SERPs, traffic is down due to holiday season. Looks like in December, it will go down more.

Our traffic has been down quite a bit the last couple of days, but that's normal. It always recovers right after Christmas. (Last year, our traffic shot up about 35 percent on the day after Christmas, compared to Christmas Day.)

Today, Something wrong. Massive changes in SERP. Approx 60% of keywords go down in search results.

Not seeing any change in keywords here, just a lot of the outdated content being picked up in Google Discover, again.

@seomotionz
@RedBar What do you expect?

Actually I posted it as a joke to see who else was working however now you ask:

China
India
Middle East
Many Far East countries

There, I think that's the majority of the world's population.

And, believe this or not, I received a substantial enquiry yesterday, quoted, and should hear something back on Monday.

Source? Not a "western" country.

I find explaining a Russian Xmas as too complicated!

@RedBar Yeah! I get it..

In India it's a National Holiday. And we do celebrate Christmas. So, traffic will be down it's an obvious. I don't know about you but my traffic was down yesterday. As, I don't get much traffic from China and Middle East.

I don't make sales, in my niche, vacations don't affect my traffic. My main site had a 50% increase in all analytics. This has been going on since the 22/12.

I think I can finally celebrate the consistency of the graphics. The highlight is the increase in users coming from Europe.

SERP's look bad in my niche (fitness). Did some searches and low quality articles, without any scientific sources and only 300 words now outrank my blogs with over 1000 words, sources and thorough explanations. This can't be how Google wants it I guess...

can't be how Google wants it

Google makes about 100 billion dollars in profit each year, I'm pretty sure they are ok with it.

There are 100s if not 1000s of webmasters all trying to grab the same top organic spot. Some of them are just better at SEO. We all might want to step back and rethink what Google wants and then give Google what they want & not what might be easiest for us.

Word count is not a good predictor of rankings & high word count can actually hurt a site. We know Google loves fast sites and very long articles with plenty of images take plenty of time to load on mobile devices. Not to mention long articles can scare away some users as they might be more inclined towards skimming. Figure out what satisfies the users & do it.

As for linking out to scientific sources & having proper citations, that is how you make your college professor happy but for SEO, what matters is who is linking into you. How many sites are linking to you and sending you traffic? Becoming popular without Google is a good way to rank in Google.

I know word count isn't the ranking factor, but G always talks about creating good content with the right information right? These articles that now outrank me don't even offer good information at all. Checking their linkprofile and metrics like Trust Flow and DA also don't show a reason to be given this high ranking. On all metrics my website scores better. So I have no clue on what grounds these websites suddenly rank higher than me. Have to figure that out ;) Thanks for your response!

Google is not your friend so do not blindly follow what they say. They are never going to share how to actually rank in their SERPs. You need to "read between the lines" when Google releases statements. Pay attention to what they aren't saying & what actions are they taking.

As for Trust Flow and DA, they don't exist. They are imaginary numbers created by people selling SEO services that have zero impact on Google rankings. SEO tools can help point you in the right direction but do not blindly follow them either as their data is completely different and incomplete compared to what Google actually uses.

The simplest advice I can share is to focus on becoming a popular site without Google. The less you need Google, the more Google tends to favor you.

Anyone else who gets traffic from Google Discover been completely cut off again the last day or so?

Yes, it's been lower for the last day. I wish they would give more weighting to what people are expressly interested in..rather than what they guess they MIGHT be interested in. All of the five feeds I monitor are getting wildly irrelevant cards.

Question... does every site that gets traffic from Discover, also have a Knowledge Panel? Has anybody found any cases where that's not so ?

UK traffic is down by 30-50% since before Christmas. Not sure why such a massive drop in UK traffic, but I don't think that's just the holidays talking. New Coronavirus variant, Brexit, recession all taking a toll this year maybe?

@topaz Do you mean 'Topics they write about?' They keep adding and removing "Topics they write about" panel for me. I have it today, but it will disappear a day after tomorrow and return by the weekend.

Discover dropped for me on December 14 for US audience :(

This is spot on. Or at least some tools for publishers when THEY clearly pick the completely wrong and outdated piece which tanks the CTR. Surfacing a variety if sources is great - especially for the lifestyle niche, but it is just too much of a lucky packet.

I've seen some sites who appear and do not have a knowledge panel.

A good article out today, but I want to draw attention to this paragraph..which is sorta related to my last post about the current problems with Discover.

[searchengineland.com...]

“If these large scale models are rolled out everywhere, then it is perceivable they are simply going to reinforce these biases in search, simply by the very logic of the training materials upon which the model has learned,” Anderson said, “So begins a perpetual cycle of reinforcement of bias, potentially.”

This may also play out in the tailored content that search engines like Google provide through features such as the Discover feed. “This will naturally lead to more myopic results/perspectives,” said Muller, “It might be okay for, say, Minnesota Vikings fans who only want to see Minnesota Vikings news, but can get very divisive when it comes to politics, conspiracies, etc. and lead to a deeper social divide.” “For marketers, this potential road leads to an even smaller piece of the search engine pie as content gets served in more striated ways,” she added.

Agree with the overall point there @Topaz, but the madness with Discover is not just bias, it's that they are also completely irrelevant and bad at times (in personal feeds, I mean). I've seen random about pages of companies who I have not engaged with in months (and these are not ads) show up at random. And things like job ads from classifieds (in verticals I'm not searching for). It's madness.

I am seeing a sudden sharp bump in UK traffic today, across a large number of keywords. Like.. +30% or something.
Anyone else seeing unusual UK traffic today?

Any idea if this is a change in UK google, or a result of UK-lockdowns?

@westcoast I saw that yesterday, after days of extremely low UK traffic. Today it dropped again, -14%. USA traffic is abysmal today, and for the last ten days or so...

Has anyone seen a large traffic increase shortly before or after Christmas? I’ve seen a lot reporting this lately.
