Hello everyone

First time posting here so, Hello everyone (spent years back and forth reading)

I am in a bit of a situation and could really do with some advice, please.

The Google May 2020 update has really had an effect on a few of my clients,

I have been comparing the competition and improving the clients E-A-T and quality backlinks to try and crawl back the places

My main client hit had 47 of his 62 keywords in the top 3 for google, local and mobile, however, in the last few months, it's just kept dropping, now only 16 in the top 3.

A lot of the content for the main location pages has since been updated including fresh images and links to try and gain back places
(was going to post an example but i don't want to break any rules)

the only thing different I can see is all the main competition, the majority of there links are UK based, however, my clients majority are USA based

The only other thing i can think of is my clients site has a slow loading time on Google insights, but this has been the case for a while now and never before seen any effects from it.

the clients site is a local service provider covering the Midlands and is set up with main home page and indevidual location pages with own phone numbers, then the usual services, contact , blog and so on.

any input would be really appreciated, if you dont mind that is

In my opinion, "building" new backlinks might do more harm than good. Google has a lot of experience in analyzing backlinks and probably has very sophisticated methods for determining when someone is "building" backlinks for the purpose of trying to improve a site's google rankings.

The same may apply to attempts to boost a site's E.A.T. by contrived artifical methods.

I have started to disavow all of the "not so good looking links" to see if it helps and all his new links have mainly been UK directories and press releases.
really don't know what else to try

Maybe you should forget backlinks and focus on making the site as useful for visitors as you can.

You mentioned a slow loading time -- This can be a bad experience for visitors and sometimes cause them to quickly leave the site. I believe that google's algorithm uses measures of visitor satisfaction as ranking factors.
