In this 9 minute web video Allan Scott, Software Engineer at Google, talks about web deduplication, how Google identifies and clusters duplicate pages, how representative URLs are picked, and how signals are forwarded to canonical URLs.

Allen is a little bit nervous during the presentation but is able to compress a lot of useful information in just nine minutes. Most interesting for me was that their first priority in choosing the URL to display is to prevent hijacking, the second priority is the user experience and only the third priority are signals we as webmaster add to URLs like redirects, canonical tags, and sitemaps.

Great video, but there is more from where that came from: Here is a playlist of all the videos from the Webmaster Conference Mountain View '19. [youtube.com...]
More interesting stuff to watch. The video about rendering is really good, and important as this is a part of search which continues to evolve at a rapid pace.
