from the Google Webmaster Central Blog [webmasters.googleblog.com]:
We’re happy to announce that we’re launching a new version of the Removals report in Search Console, which enables site owners to temporarily hide a page from appearing in Google Search results. The new report also provides info on pages on your site that have been reported via other Google public tools.

There are different tools available for you to report and remove information from Google, in this post we’ll focus on three areas that will be part of the new Search Console report: temporary removals, outdated content and SafeSearch filtering requests.

temporary removals

Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but didn't GSC already ( or previously) have an option for temporarily removing a page from the search index? Seems like the removal lasted for 60 days. Then the page would automatically be returned to the index unless a noindex tag was added to it in the meantime.

It was on the webmaster tools accessible through the legacy tools menu of the new GSC.
They are gradually porting those tools.

SweetPotato -- Thanks for your reply.

But I'm a bit puzzled. I just checked my GSC Legacy Tools and couldn't find the old url removal tool anywhere. Maybe Google eliminated it in the last day or two, because the new url removal tool is now available in GSC in the "Index" section of the menu.

Also, if I remember correctly, the old temporary removal period was for 60 days, whereas the new removal period is "about 6 months" according to link that the OP provided. That's a big change.
