My GSC says that I don't have any messages. In fact I don't remember ever getting any messages from google for any of my sites. What kind of messages would they send?

Mostly useless stuff. Mindless non-existent coverage issues. If you update the disavow it will tell you you updated the disavow..... Also DMCA takedowns received.
But it will never say anything about how your site is receiving only a % of the traffic due to algorithm penalties. THAT is a secret.

Celebrate if they have not been sending you emails. Stuff like, "Your site is mobile friendly". One day you'll see their little number on that bell icon. You can click and see their messages. Be strong. ;)

My GSC says that all of them are mobile friendly now.
Once some years ago when I checked them in GSC, it said that on one of them the nav links were too close together, and I fixed them. But I don't remember getting any special messages.
