New site volatility?

Can someone shed some light on something for me please.

I set up a small 15 page site which went live around 7 weeks ago and whilst it's obviously very early days I managed to quickly rank one of the key money pages at the bottom of page 2 within 5 weeks. All I've done (I believe) is to match the page to the user intent.

This came after hanging around page 10-13 for the first 5 weeks.

It's a competitive niche so I'm not expecting too much too soon but what's baffling me is over the last 2 weeks it's jumped from position 19-20 to page 15, back to bottom of page 2 out of the SERPS completely, back to position 19-20 and is now on page 10 as of yesterday morning.

Is this level of volatility normal with new sites?

15 pages is not a lot of material to build a rep or brand ... expect some volatility.

I know the sandbox (call it what you will) exists in spite of the fact google doesn’t actually have 1 but how long then would you expect the volatility to continue?

I’m guessing now would be a good time to gain links?

There is never a bad time to gain links.
