Icons next to text seemed like a positive when I first saw them, but now I feel its just another thing to bring about change. I categorize this in "personal preference" instead of "helpful UI".

IOW ... I don't pay attention to these kind of things any longer ... and I suspect a growing number of users feel the same way. Cute when it first appeared .. then again flash sites were the rave at one time as well ... :)

... and then next week they'll drop the text and retain only the icons, because users will have had all the time anyone could possibly need to internalize the meanings of all those little symbols.

....true ... it seems there's a real effort to return to pictograms and hieroglyphs instead of language. (sigh)

Then, to present a "cleaner" design, they'll make the pictograms invisible until you mouse over where they're hidden.

There is a correlation between icons/graphics and websites. Google, the website powered by everyone's content.
