New site - SERP impressions increased, but CTR decreased

Haven't really got a specific question, just looking for some opinions... We're a supplier of B2B services in our niche industry - our site went online in October 2015 (although we've had a offline presence for 15+ years) and never it really performed very well. In October 2017 we rebranded (changed company name and logo). The website was "re-skinned" accordingly, but continued to perform poorly. In May this year we completely redesigned the site and rebuilt from the ground up, placing an emphasis on content (rather than the services we offer). As such we've been publishing regular "explainer" articles.

I've been monitoring the site's performance in GSC and have seen a significant increase in the number of impressions since the new site went live (up from < 100/day to almost 1.5K/day). In fact, impressions have increased 4x in the last 6 months compared to the previous 6 months. However, the number of clicks has only increased 2x in the same period, meaning that our CTR has decreased by 50% (dropped from ~5% to 2.5%). Our overall average position has increased from ~50 to ~30 (with some pages/queries ranking near the top of page 1).

I'm concerned that search engines, having boosted our site up due to the new content, will see the decrease in CTR as a signal from users and drop the site down the rankings. What strategies, beside tweaking titles and meta-descriptions, can I employ?

You mentioned meta descriptions but not backlinks. I'm thinking you might not be prioritizing properly which is probably a bigger problem than your CTR.

CTR & time on page is useful when fine tuning a website. Before that, it is generally wiser to focus on gaining relevant traffic from profitable SERPs.

Thanks. We have a reasonable number of backlinks, but this has prompted me to shift focus on to active link building.

Not sure what you mean by "relevant traffic from profitable SERPs" - can you expand?

The more web content you have the more likely you are going to rank for a variety of search terms including some unintended terms. You don't want to be distracted, so it is better to focus more on the serps that convert. Not all traffic is equal.

Thanks. We have a content generation plan and are (trying) to create articles which target long tail keywords, which are more "transactional" than "informational".
