How does Google rate syndicated article backlinks?

Subject says it all. Got mentioned in an article and it's now been syndicated to tens of other sites. Does google see it as one link from the source or does each of the other outlets count too?

Google tends to give credit for each appearance but usually the sites that republish content tend to have very little link power to give. If you are fortunate enough to get mentioned by a popular news services like the Associated Press, you can get many good backlinks.

I see an initial boost from it for a short time period and then I believe it tapers off as it gets lost in the noise.
