I have noticed I have quite a few toxic links. I am in the process of removing them but I just wondered why would anyone go to the trouble of putting my site in content spam forums. Whats the point? My site is not hacked so I don't get the intention. Any one know?

Why? It's an old hat technique to try and automate a penalty

Vandalism.

Someone may be using this tactic to push your site down in the SERP and push another site up.

Wasn't there a hypothesis a few years ago that said linking to authoritative sites for a topic could benefit the linker? Maybe the linking sites are hoping they'll look better in Google's eyes. (They may or may not be wrong, but what do they have to lose?)
