In Webmaster Tools, the Index Status of pages keeps dropping vs the Site Operator which does not show any decline. One shows 84 pages indexed, the site operator shows 3753 indexed. Which method is more reliable? Is the drop in the WMT concerning?

could it be a https vs http issue?
or a subdomain issue? - i.e. site:example.com vs site:www.example.com

The discrepancy between Google's tool reports has been documented in these forums many times.

Do your stats show which pages consistently get traffic from google?

What's important about a page is whether or not it's consistently getting traffic from google. The tools can be wrong. Your stats tell the real story.
