Why would XML sitemap all of sudden show "pending" status?

My XML sitemap has been uploaded to Google Search Console for months, since the spring. I check it in Google's Search Console periodically just to make sure there are no errors. Yesterday I checked it and it now has the status of "pending" and still has this status today. Does anyone know why all of a sudden a sitemap that has been submitted for months with no errors would all of a sudden be pending? Should I resubmit the sitemap or wait? I used the test button and it shows there are no errors.

No worries, Googlebot is in some degree of crawling your site and the indexing is not complete yet. This should resolve in a day or so.

GSC is notoriously behind on data currency - i would wait a few days before worrying.

Ok, thank you. Google had already indexed my pages back in the spring, same sitemap still submitted and I had not submitted anything new since then, so that is why I was wondering why it was in pending status. It has been three or four days now with the pending status.

Again... Googlebot recrawls websites periodically. The pages get reindexed. The GSC sitemap report will include the tally of that. This is normal.

Ok, thank you. I know all that and it is not a normal I have ever seen. I check status there every day. My sitemap is processed by Google periodically throughout every month, but this was the first time it said "pending" and remained pending for so long when the sitemap was not being newly submitted. I asked this question over at Google forum and they said "Pending just means its still 'processing'. For whatever reason Google have a bigger than usual 'backlog' of sitemaps to process."

For the several GSC accounts I watch, I've seen this occur at least once a year for each.

Also consider we are in the middle of the Mobile-First Index [webmasterworld.com] update.
