Easy way to gain backlinks for content sites

We all know that Google likes websites with solid backlinks. So if you have a bunch of good content, it is likely another site has stolen some of that good content. I like to reach out to them with a nice but firm email saying they can keep the content if they add a backlink to my site. When facing a possible copyright infringement lawsuit, websites tend to be very happy to give me backlinks to resolve the situation. I usually don't even need to worry about duplicate content because I regularly revise my content to keep it fresh & accurate.

What other ways do you use to gain backlinks and/or deal with stolen content?

@goodroi how do you find the sites that copy you?

@NickMNS - Some sites block copyscape.

I've found plagiarized & outright scraped content by just cut'n pasting phrases from my articles and doing web searches. I even tried translators but that became too much work.

Wouldn't it make sense to demand a rel="canonical" statement, too?

People at wikipedia are supposed to give you a link (nofollow) when they copy information from your site.

But even if they do give you a link, eventually somebody else will delete it.

I find content copiers using copyscape, and/or doing manual google searches, and/or reverse image tools. Some people steal my content and don't even bother to copy the images so I can look at who is hotlinking my images. I am happy when someone in my industry takes my content because most of the time I get many backlinks. I get a link from the original stolen content and then offer them guest articles (with embedded links of course) which they happily accept.

Different things work for different sites. My articles are basically excerpts from my books, so aside from a fair use sentence or two with citation & a linkback, I consider everything else copyright infringement which sets in motion appropriate action.
