Hopefully I am wrong but this looks like a spam link attempt. Why do I think this is spam? If you are trying to sell SEO consulting services you probably shouldn't be asking for help to SEO your own site.

I'm feeling optimistic so I am going to assume OP was just asking for insights to run a better SEO consulting business. Ok, I would start with offering a wide range of marketing solutions. If you are a small business and can't directly offer these services then partner with other small marketing firms. Establish a referral network with experts in PPC, analytics, social, etc.

Personally I don't waste time trying to rank for SEO services. It is a very competitive search term so it eats up a bunch of non-billable hours. It is easier for me to under promise and over deliver SEO results so my reputation speaks for itself and my clients generate new business for me through word of mouth.

I also regularly collaborate with other SEOs. We are all human, so none of us are perfect or know everything. Being able to get a second opinion on extra tricky situations is useful. Even if I have a good way to do something, there can be a better way. This is why I like to talk with other smart people. As much as forums like WebmasterWorld can be helpful, some of the more cutting edge stuff is just not posted publicly or we risk tipping off Google.

Worst case, if you are a SEO consultant and have no clients than be your own client. Develop your own sites. The internet landscape is constantly changing and there is still plenty of ways to make money online. If you are good with SEO, you will often find working on your own sites makes more money in the long term than providing SEO services. This also provides you with successful case studies that you can use to demonstrate to potential clients your SEO talent. Clients really like to see documented case studies before they give you consulting money.

Why are SEO consulting companies always sending me emails about how they can increase my sales, when I don't sell anything on any of my sites?

Why do SEO consulting companies that send (spam) emails never themselves rank in SERPS?

Oh, dear, I've just fallen prey to one of my own hard-and-fast rules: If something makes me laugh out loud, it gets an upvote. This rule was never intended for the present forum :)

We do rank for very competitive keywords and I can tell you it's not all its cracked up to be. 99% of our business is from word of mouth. If anything, it's a waste of time these days as I probably spend at least 1-2 hours on the phone each day giving people advice on what to avoid when searching for seo. (After understanding that they don't have the budget for our services) wife says I'm too nice but can't bear the thought of these small startups damaging their domains with crap link pollution and paying for the privilege.

My best advice would be to get a couple of jobs and do them at cost. If you do an amazing job, they will talk and you will start seeing a trickle of jobs slowly growing by itself. If you can't do an amazing job, stay away as you are just damaging everyone else's already tarnished industry reputation. We don't need more Cowboys.
