I have some content on my site that I noindexed due to quality purposes (aka panda). In most cases this content has been noindexed for quite some time (years in many cases). I'm finally at the point that I would like to try to revive that content by improving it. I've had good success improving the lower quality content that I didn't noindex*** but I'm wondering, since this other content has been noindexed for so long, what the best approach would be.
Has anyone revived long dead (noindexed) content with any luck?
i see a couple possible approaches:
1) Improve it, remove the noindex tag, keep same url
2) improve it, give it a fresh url, 404 old url
3) improve it, give it a fresh url, 301 old url to new url
Other ideas? I'd love to hear if anyone else has had success (or failures) with reintroducing content into the wild vs just testing this blindly. Since I have had luck with improving our other content I'm a bit nervous about potentially tipping the scale again somehow and undoing all that good. As of right now, Google referrals are up 25% after the initial improvements (of course, after losing so much traffic to Panda over the years, 25% is a mere drop in the bucket)
*** (they were higher priority pages so they got the treatment first and noindexing the other content stopped the downward panda spiral)
