Just in case you've wondered, Google image search "similar items" carousel shows eligible images that have employed schema.org product markup. [developers.google.com]

If i understand their post, it's for photos of things like "handbags, sunglasses, and shoes". My sites don't have those kinds of photos, so I guess I'm out of luck on this one.

I suspect it's to busy up the shopping aspect, but, hey, if you have something in those sectors, use schema markup and away you go.
