Will Google index an image if the image does not appear on a page?

Let me explain (this scenario is purely hypothetical):
Case 1 (typical): You have a page and you display an image on the page, that image will most likely appear in image search.
Case 2 (typical): You have a page and you display a thumbnail of an image on the page and link to an image file, that image will most likely appear in image search.
Case 3 (case in point): You have a page and you display a link with some anchor text eg: "see image" on the page and link to an image file, will that image be indexed by Google?

Not in my experience. The image must display as page content somewhere.

So...
Case 1 = yes
Case 2 = yes
Case 3 = no, unless the image displays somewhere else, e.g. some scraper grabbed it and displays it at another resource.

I wanted several images to be included in Google & Bing's image search but they were not relevant to any page content of mine so I displayed them at Pinterest & they eventually were indexed in image search. Google+ is another.

How you tag them & surrounding text is important.

This is what I thought as well, but wanted to hear it from others, just to be sure.
