Will ICANN changes impact SEO?

Hello All:

Amateur-rookie and topic lurker here. I came across this linked article today while reading an ecommerce blog post regarding the US ceding control over ICANN the past week in response to large websites being down on Monday (ie eBay, Paypal, misc. sites)

What kind of impact, if any, would this have on any weird happenings that posters have mentioned recently besides the Google updates?

Forgive me in advance for my ignorance of the topic--I'm just trying to understand how everything on the internet fits together and impacts my own ecommerce...

Offhand I can't think of any reason why the change in control over ICANN would cause churn in Google's search results.

When you read this thread, oftentimes it's easy to get a false impression of what's actually happening in the Google's search results. They're usually a lot more stable than the discussion here would suggest.

I didn't know that some large websites were down on Monday. Can you give some more details about this?

@aristotle Some posters on the ecommerce blog post I read were saying it was reported on Down Detector but that it seemed that it was a partial outage. Reports of eBay technical boards blowing up about it. Also, others were reporting it was happening with Etsy, Paypal, and other major banks like Wells Fargo and BOA. One poster just mentioned the DNS errors could have been due to the change in ICANN over the weekend per an article she read, and I think that this was all happening on Monday. I was just wondering if this changeover could in fact impact things...

Cindy_B -- Thanks. I hadn't heard about this. I can remember that years ago big "traffic jams" or slow downs would occasionally occur due to a problem on the grid.

P.S. I also wanted to say that you shouldn't take the Updates and SERP Changes thread too seriously because it's just a hodge podge of unsystematic and often insignificant observations.
