According to Google's John Mueller, Google supports JSON-LD breadcrumbs, despite the out-of-date documentation, [developers.google.com] which, John says, should be updated.
They actually started supporting in late 2015. Still good news. I am a big supported of JSON-LD and it is for me the best way to make Google crawl some more obscure stuff like forum posts, comments and such.

I see articles on sites having their titles replaced by the breadcrumb trail, related?
"example > topic > sub page > widgets" is what the title reads like in Google search despite the on page title being traditional plain text without having example, topic or sub page in it.

I'm using JSON-LD Breadcrumbs and love them because they're easier to code and less intrusive than using markup. The other way is pretty easy, too if you're using templates. Both display well.
