Just noticed this today, when typing in to search for band + lyrics they now show on the search with a link to google play.

Looks like all those lyric sites will go out of business.

I saw that the other day and yes, it kind of defeats all those other sites, some of which might be AdSense.
I see that you have to actually click through after a number of lines. There's a link to "Full lyrics on Google Play" where you can also buy the song.

What g shows in increasingly fine-tuned verticals will continue to grow, At some point "our content" will become their bottom line to satisfy shareholders. Each "take over" will be in a defined area with a sort of finite catalog (ie lyrics, movies, tv, hotels, travel) which cross "site boundaries" against content presentation. That is, no single site can stand up and say "g took my stuff!"

Google used to be just a search page with links to websites, now they seem to be taking pieces and some cases all of the pie for themselves.

They now do money conversions, weight/ height conversions, they give football results & fixtures, and many more, will it reach the point where all information is listed without the need to even click through to a website?

Huh. Won't that just make it easier for ASCAP to stomp on them? I mean, we're not talking about looking up the lyrics to Melancholy Baby or Beautiful Dreamer here...

thanks rustybrick. I remember you posting that, but I had not seen the lyrics in the SERPs until now, so, perhaps it's now a wider reach.

I hope this type of thing happens more, affecting more people. The faster this happens, then the quicker change can happen. Too many people can brush off this type of behavior and ignore what is happening because it's not in their backyard yet. The more Google gets into this game, the greater the reaction will eventually be. Personally I would love to show content like it's my own, even if other people did the schooling and the work to create it. If I could just take the end product without ramifications? Beautiful. Forget about ethical.

Just in case anyone cares... "lyric" is plural unto itself (like "music") however it has been misspelled so often and for so long (since rock'n roll came on the scene) that several dictionaries list both spellings.

I just figure that Rogers and Hammerstein had it right "Music and Lyrics by"... that kind of thing. :)

Well that's some publisher's mistake, not Rogers and Hammerstein.

When I grew up I was taught the word "ain't" was not correct grammar and to never use it. Now it also is in most English language dictionaries.

Of course there's no room for grammatical correctness on the internet. We make up new words (netizen) and join words (web page = webpage) and talk with people of other nations where grammar is irrelevant.

I was kidding a bit, but not by much. Lyric(s) is used exactly the same way as Poem(s). There are both singular and plural, and in most cases the plural is preferred over the singular.

Google is licensing lyrics from 4,000+ publishers via LyricFind. This news is from last month:

When I grew up

Well, that's the problem. If you're distinguishing between de facto language change and transitory incorrect usage, you have to use a criterion other than "what I was taught in primary school". Otherwise you're just being an old fart ;)

And now you can put the Poetry Experts and the Song Experts in the same room and watch them fight over what a "verse" is.

:: irritably wondering why, if {name of series suppressed} is supposed to be happening in 1933, all the music sounds like 1947 ::

I'm not going by primary school.... been a musician for over 55 years and a lyric is either a single song or a line in a song, and lyrics is a collection of lines (for a single song), or a collection of songs. What has been revealed is that g has licensed these lyric(s), the number is rather limited, and that begs the question does the grantor actually has the rights to grant permission?
