Subdomain versus Directory for Learn/Support Sections

Similar to a recent post but because this type of website section is quite unique, has a ton of content around topics and products important to the main www domain, and in general is used by a different group of people (users versus prospects), what are people's opinions?

if you had a tremendously large section of your website devoted to tutorials, product documentation, etc...would you put that in a subdirectory or subdomain. because of the reasons listed above, i think this type of section deserves a unique thought process, different than one applied to the typical country site debate.
