Hi guysl,
Since many sites have the same PDF datasheets and user manuals, are they consider duplicate content?

Yes, but I wouldn't worry about it. Certain things HAVE to be duplicate (like official product safety or hazard certifications).

Think about it in terms of percentage. You're definitely going to have some duplicate content; if you can keep the percentage low, you're probably fine. When the percentage of duplicate content starts to creep up to match the regular content - then you might start to have problems. (And no there's no hard and fast number. You just have to use common sense)

What about when the PDF file out ranks the actual page in Google? I have several PDFs like that.

I search the net. I'm thinking about adding this to my htaccess file. Good idea?

Some things, such as facts and data, can't be "copyrighted" and are public domain, and in that regard are considered common knowledge and, while appearing here, there and everywhere, aren't really duplication. These items are FACTS. It is possible that user manuals (but that's a different kind of copyright infringement if you are not the manufacturer) might fall into that category as far as lawyers are concerned. How a search engine, such as google, sees it is something else. When in doubt NOINDEX the item and don't worry about any rank or juice. (This advice applies only to material YOU did not create)
