Serving static content via CDN on an external link - SEO issues?

Hello Webmasters,

I've been discussing with a friend regarding his website, where he is serving static content through a CDN using the .net version of his website

(e.g.the website is example.com and static contents are served through static.example.net, any other request on example.net is 301 redirected to the example.com domain).

Its an old website and generally doing fine in SE's, but I have a feeling that it should be doing better, and I was thinking of this as a reason, like Google maybe considering those static content links as external links, so they are giving link juice away for no reason.

I wish you kindly share your thoughts on this, should they be worried about this? and what is the best practice here? should we do the move to static.example.com

Thanks in advance.

Has the any ranking changes been observed when the CDN was first introduced?

I'm not sure if there was a change in ranking, the CDN is used since years, i cannot get that piece of information, no one was closely watching ranking at that time.
