We have a site, about 9 months old which got to no 12 in google.com for its main targeted keyword, then disapeared completely more than a month ago. However in google.ca it is no 6 for this keyword and also does very well in other google domains. The site is hosted in the USA and its a USA business.

Google doesn't use the same ranking rules for each country. Google.com has the most complete set of spam filters. Other Google country versions often only have a subset of the spam filters found on Google.com so it is often easier to rank outside of the US. That being said Google.ca tends to be closer to Google.com results so I am little surprised. I would double check to make sure you aren't seeing any personalized results which could skew the data.

Find all the places where you currently describe your international widgets as "about the size of a hockey puck" and change them to "about the size of a baseball".

No, of course it won't be anything that silly ... but who knows what accident of layout or wording could make you more appealing to Canadians.
