Twitter and Google have finally announced and rolled out the twitter feed into Google's mobile SERPs in the US. [webmasterworld.com]

Here's what i'm planning on doing.

I've been monitoring the Mobile SERPs for a while to see how it differs from desktop, and it's clear there are better ways to optimise for the small screen.
Images seem to be extremely valuable, especially in the twitter feed itself, and, of course, shortened urls.

I have already set up a number of tweets aimed at capturing the mobile audience in the US. Until the program is running for a while it's going to be difficult to know how well it'll work. Until I try I can't make an objective judgement.

What other ideas and programs do you have to test this?

I make heavy use of scheduled social media posts for my event sites (plus up to 80% of my traffic is mobile in season anyway) so this can only help. Most of my social media users come from Facebook, so it'll be interesting to see how it affects the Twitter acquisition this year.

Honestly I don't care about the twitter feed in Google serps ... because I care much more about how Twitter significantly boosts my Google rankings. By engaging my target market with relevant and timely tweets I can drive real traffic to my website. This boosts the usage signals on my website and it also increases the exposure which helps lead to more backlinks - both of these are really good for boosting Google rankings. Think about how many new consumers I reach via twitter who later will go to Google and search for "goodroi widgets". Google filed a patent that rewards sites who are searched liked this. If I get into a controversial twitter debate (and don't look like an idiot :)) it creates even more interest which has many indirect SEO benefits to my site.

Even if there was no SEO benefit I still want to utilize Twitter and the other social channels. By developing traffic from these sources it makes me less dependent on Google which I think we all can agree is a smart business move. Plus IMHO the less you depend on Google for traffic, the more Google wants to send traffic to your site.

So far this really only seems to be impacting searches for celebrities and some limited searches for hashtags. May be just me, but I can't imagine people using Google to search for hashtags. Why not just go to Twitter for that purpose? Frankly, unless Google enables regular old search queries to bring up tweets, I can only see limited use for marketers.

I'm starting to see more and more links to Twitter accounts directly in search results over the past week or so. These aren't links to Tweets but to account pages. Seems like this integration is progressing but I've yet to see links to actual tweets.

I'm pretty sure that this will only show trending tweets - from celebrities - and live events. Top hashtags related to the search query will also be shown in the SERPs. And yes, we've got little room to use it for SEO purposes...I guarantee that.

So far, I've seen no tweets in the SERPs, so it's still a work in progress IMHO.
