Ahh. Looks like G just released something for the informational sites :)

[insidesearch.blogspot.com...]

A carousel for selected results that shows additional stories/pictures.

This is the sort of thing I was talking about. The example shows a search for "Greece". The #2 organic result is from "The Guardian". This change injects a pretty tall image carousel pointing to other Guardian articles underneath their organic result, pushing down #3-#10 a pretty significant amount.

They don't come right out and say it, but there's several mentions of known brands in the article. So, potentially, this widget will be for "brands" only.

Google has not announced many details about this so to be safe we should not make assumptions. This might turn into an extension of websites listed in Google News or maybe even a return of Google Authorship. Ok maybe not the return of Google+ :) but let's be careful not to assume anything this early.

Sure. Things that are clear:

a) It is currently for some limited list of sites: If you don’t see this new feature yet when you search for your favorite site, stay tuned—we’ll be making this available for more sites soon.

b) It does take up a notable amount of vertical space, pushing the remaining organics down. This, of course, also has the effect of pushing the ads that number of pixels (sidebar, et al.) above the remaining organics.
