I'm attacked again by hundreds of auto generated WP sites on the free .tk domains.

It's common practice for me, and now I've reached 20 000 domain: lines in the disavow file...

Anyway, I took a look at the source code on those domains and I've found "the secret" meta-tags.

I'll share it with you now!

<meta content='10' name='pagerank?'/>

But a lot more on pastebin!
[pastebin.com...]

Mods note: Thank you for this tongue in cheek post!

I have left the above link to pastebin to show how easy is to spread SEO misinformation and how important is not to believe everything you read.

Places that feature mixture of correct and incorrect information are most dangereous since the correct information can "lend credibility" to the incorrect one. I am posting this within your post rather than in a separate post to ensure this is read and your post not taken out of context for ones who do not know, should this thread go to two or more pages.

Hee.

I got curious and looked for lists of metas that actually exist, which led me to this [gist.github.com]. (It's really http. Object lesson about dangers of straight apostrophes in conjunction with single quotes included at no extra charge.)

To balance it out, the very next item on the SERP for my particular query was an article professing to list 18 (eighteen) essential metas. Eighteen. (Don't know about the rest of youse, but I've got three: charset, viewport and description.) Well, maybe seventeen; they seem to count the <title> as a meta. Uh, think I won't include a link for that one.

You could ask Metta World Peace [en.wikipedia.org].

My biggest competitor is is zilloe and they use a whole bunch of these tags. I contemplated copying, because they dominate every search that has a zip code, but it all looked so spamy i couldn't get myself to do it.

Repeat after me - "correlation aint causation".

Just because the #1 ranking website has a yellow background color does not mean yellow backgrounds make websites rank #1. It might be a good April Fools prank to spread a rumor about background colors and Google rankings.

I had *SO* many similar discussions with a previous employer on this issue! Not sure if colored backgrounds was ever one of the things we *MUST* change because example.com is ranking for "foo" so we have to do the same thing.

Another related issue that we always had with him is that even if this particular trick is the reason for high ranking today, that doesn't mean it will work tomorrow. Google may not like it and penalize them (and anyone else they find doing the same thing) once they catch them. Or tomorrow's algorithm update may make it moot.
