Number of pages indexed in Google, site:domain-name.com

I have a website, which is showing "About 222,000 results (0.39 seconds)" for "site:domain-name.com". When I go to the last page (14th page) of these results, it changes to something like this: "Page 14 of 138 results (0.20 seconds)". So in the end, it looks like the number of available pages is 138. Can you tell me how does it work, and what it means. Are these pages in the supplemental index, and not really accessible through Google.com? How does it work?

Thanks.

The site: command is simply not an accurate indicator of how many pages are in the index.

GWT is probably closer. How many actual URLs do you have?

Unless it's a ginormous site, when I see numbers like that, I start looking for potential duplicate content and finding places where I can tell Google not to crawl. Making sure my www is redirected to non-www (or vice versa), blocking session IDs and defining URL parameter behavior.

Do you have any subdomains or sites in subfolders? Sometimes they get counted in with the site: command.
