I'm currently doing some on-page seo for an Q&A portal and I'm wondering if it makes any difference how much posts/answers are shown when using the rel prev/next meta tag.

Does google ranks the page as a whole when using those tags or does it still matters how much content is on each page?

You definitely want to make sure the page has content or it will not rank. If you are not sure I would err on the side of caution and include more content.

I added rel prev/next about 6 months ago hoping it would help Google figure out my forum pages. They are still having problems, in the serps they only list the number of posts and date from the page being listed and not for the entire topic. For some posts that have 10 or more pages this makes it look like the topic is dead/old since Google usually links to the first page of the topic and not the last.
