Buying links, self-placing links, or dropping domain names in forums... in fact any obviously manipulative technique... in the long run is going to hurt you more than it's likely to help.

The most cost-effective way to get google traffic is probably by spending money and time analyzing exactly why you aren't currently getting google traffic.

Spending $20 on getting a nice little article written by someone, an article that will get shared about, one you can share yourself on twitter/fb will go further than any $20 you spend buying links or buying adwords.

Before buying anything, make sure that your site is ready to rank, starting from square one. Go down the guidelines Google offers and make sure you meet minimum site expectations. Only then, make it better than your competition. It doesn't pay to follow everyone's ideas until you have polished the parts that search engines care about.

Article directories have little value today, put an article on your site that you want others to share. Read here: [webmasterworld.com...]

Aaron, I'm wondering whether you're working from a script of known bad techniques, trolling for comments here... or whether you just happened to read a lot of really dreadful advice.

You need to start with a good site and good content, and then promote it. AdWords, eg, can be a good long term promotional investment if you build a site that users like. Otherwise, in the long run, you're wasting your money.

It might make sense to concentrate on fewer sites, put your energies into one site at a time, and build up your content gradually.

What's the most affordable way to get better Google traffic?

Are you asking for advice to obtain, plain and simple, more traffic?

Or, do you have enough traffic, thus you need advice to obtain better quality/converting traffic?

Google doesn't want to make you site popular, it wants to rank popular sites (*)

Make your site popular. Promote it with ads, social media, make it something people will love to share and tell others about. Use email, advertising, contests, whatever you can.

biz 101 - find a need and fill it.

make sure it is a real need and that people will pay money (or do something) to fill it. and that means LOTS of people.

you do that and the rest is easy.

Oh yeah, and hang out a LOT here - ask lots of questions - get to know people. There's more up to date wisdom here (and good folks too) than most anywhere else that will help you learn how to work on the web. Good luck!

Write authoritative articles, travel widely in the bush, jungle, desert or on the seas and take original images and produce original HD videos in several languages starting with the most widely spoken, Mandarin and Spanish, and that no one else has and live in widget-ville 24/7 and establish yourself as the #1 authority in your niche and you are good to go! At least a first degree in journalism / photography / history / economics with a focus on your niche would be hard to beat. And a fat travel budget. And be born there, if it is a geographical location niche. Not born there will be your ball chain.
