Does having tons of "social" business pages help?

Would it help rankings to create social accounts with business information related to your business for rankings?

Creating business pages for facebok, google+, twitter, tumbler, instagram, whatever...the whole bunch of them, like 30 or so. On all profiles, posting images, videos , related content ect...

Or might google penalyze you for having "too many" social profile? All these profiles with have links(although no follow) and citations...

What kind of strategy would that be:

A. Useless
B. Punishable
C. Helpful

From a pure link juice point of view that would neither harm nor help. But if you are promoting a business, having a firm presence on the social media can certainly help. Not because it will help the rankings in the search engines so much, but social media can be a significant source of traffic bypassing the search engines completely.

I have one site which I blocked from the search engines except for the homepage and all traffic is coming from social media and people referring each other to the site. It provides a very stable stream of income and no need to worry about Penguins, Panda's or other zoo park inhabitants.

How is that even possible? Social media only with no search engines? What do you sell? What is on offer?

I have a moving company in Vancouver, BC , Canada, nothing to tweet about, nothing to talk about or socialize about...

Sorry to sound so bitter, but I'm very skeptical about the whole "social" media bandwagon unless it specifically fits a type of industry.

Yes..
Not all the profiles will be NF.
Some of them will also be DF.

It's very true that social media does not fit many industries and can appear to be a waste of time. But think outside of the box. You can target others within your industry and develop relationships. Say, for example, one moving company is booked solid and can't take on an extra client. If they know about you, they may send some work your way just to serve the customer. This happens in many industries, and I'm sure movers are no different. You may also be able to target people geographically who are #moving with promoted tweets, posts, etc.

As far as links go, most popular social media sites use nofollow on the links so they would be useless. Possibly the brand mentions would be of benefit, but search engines are pretty keen on what areas of social media websites are actual discussion areas and just self promotion pages.

Then it won't help you, so don't bother. Your time would no doubt be better spent elsewhere.

It's a service where people can create something online. The only reason I let the front page crawl by the search engines is that many people are referring each other by mentioning the brand name on social media. People lookup the brand name on search engines to find the site even though brand name and domain name are the same.

This might not work as well for e-commerce or informational sites though.

There is no silver bullet. Social media are one of a number of signals that get your site ranked. Going mega on any one signal to the exclusion of the others has the risk of being considered spamming, maybe not now but next time the algo is rewritten....
