Canonicals for similar ecommerce content on same site?

I have a client who has an ecommerce website that sells products that fall into categories that are very similar. For example, mens and women's products are virtually the same.

In many instances across the site, the category page content therefore qualifies as duplicate, since it's virtually identical to other pages.

How would you suggest dealing with this duplicate content issue? I was thinking of placing the canonical on the category page that provides the most in revenue or traffic, but I'd like to get some input, since I think the dup content is really hurting the site.

It's tough to provide feedback without knowing a lot more about your site. What indicators do you have that the site is being hurt by a duplicate content situation?

What does this mean exactly?

Wht is the difference between "are the same," and "are virtually the same,"?

ARE they the same? If not, then how not?
