Is there a limit on canonical links pointing to single URL?

Pretty sure Google is on to that one. I wouldn't do it.

Depending on your objectives, another option is to put noindex tags on all of the extra pages.

What would be the reason for having so many pages with more or less similar content?

I can easily understand why a site may have 50+ pages of exactly the same content (e.g. URL capitalisation issue, parameter order issue) and rel=canonical should be fine there.

But in the cases where the content is similar but not the same - this may be an issue as netmeg said above.
