I have a huge disavow file, a lot of scrappers are using our content and RSS file.

Today I've read something that blow me away, if true...

Disavowing a main domain will not disavow any subdomains. E.g. “domain:blogspot.com” will not disavow blog123.blogspot.com. It needs a separate entry “domain:blog123.blogspot.com”.

Is this true?
If it's true, then I'm screwed! I have a lot of spammers using xxx.domainname.tld variations!

for me

domain:xxxx.com = domain:*.xxxx.com

that statement you read would be true for "well known freehosts" such as blogspot or wordpress.com, but on your typical domain:example.com google would assume all *.example.com subdomains were also being disavowed.
