Question A blog with mostly pictures/videos. how to rank?
Hello,

Im opening a "fail blog" with funny pictures and videos. The blog will have a .com domain and be updated daily with new funny pictures and videos. My question is how to a rank this blog when there is less focus on content?

Is it enough to write 100-200 words daily for each picture/video update to keep it ranking?

All tips are welcome!

content is not text. Rank it the same as any other site, with good links.

Will you be creating these "funny pictures and videos" yourself, or copy them from somewhere else?

There is a hell of a lot more than just text when it comes to page content, most newbies get confused when they hear about "thin content" or "low quality content" and they run out and buy some fancy article writers hoping it will fix the problem... which of course most times does nothing, because, content is a lot more than text.

Pinterest pages rank pretty well.

Your site ranking will depend more on social signal. Meaning, it will depend mostly on how people gives value on your site, like by sharing your images and videos. Perfect example would be 9gag. :)

Pictures found online? I guess that you will first ask the owners of the pictures for permission? Or are you one of those guys who will take other people's work and try to make money out of it? I know of dozens of sites who use my pictures without permission (or hotlink them), add a bit of text and try to make money out of it. I never send warnings. A Google DMCA or replacing hotlinked images by a huge ugly image through htaccess is always my first action. Be careful. Google DMCAs might hurt your domain more than anything else.

Sounds like an original idea, scraping photos and trying to get them to rank...I've never seen a site like that....I suspect Google will love it and put it on page 1.

However if they're originals and get linked to there could be good traffic etc.

The bottom line here is that unless your site has something new and unusual and unique, and is NOT using the same pictures that every other site (of which there are about a billion right now) uses, you probably won't rank very well for it. This is not an SEO thing, this is a business model thing. If you are a latecomer into a crowded space, you better have a plan to offer something significantly better, and a plan to use other channels for generating traffic at first, because organic search is not going to show up overnight.

@netmeg - they may not rank high for long, but sites like the OP describe are your typical rank and bank variety...and Google seems to have a flaw in that they will play along for a while. The OP is just probably trying to devise his own black hat method of making a few quick bucks...which IMHO juts makes the web worse.

Like I said, my images are all over the web, but Google is showing only those that have been stolen and re-posted on MFA sites...mostly out of Indonesia. Way to go G.

This sounds very familiar. I have the same problem with my images. My stolen photos rank on websites mostly from the country you mentioned and with AdSense all over. One stolen photo, one or two phrases and 3 Adsense ads ... and Google seems to love this.

It is painful to see how Google is hurting genuine businesses with Panda and at the same time the algo is not able to detect and penalize MFA sites with stolen content.
