Google's John Mueller said this morning that expects penguin 3.0 to be launched sometime before the end of 2014, probably, maybe.

Might be the tide going out before they roll out the new update.

I highly doubt we'll see Penguin rolled before Panda is done -- The two together would likely take too much processing power and create too much noise to be monitored effectively to roll new versions of both at the same time.

Was thinking that myself JD. All we know about panda is that is was still rolling yesterday morning. Any confirmation that it is not done yet?

No confirmation, except the "still bouncing all over" posts I'm reading here and other places seem to indicate it's still going.

They could be testing Penguin with the most recent Panda, trying to get them to work together.

rish3

Someone mentioned recently in another thread that such a long gap between updates gives spam link-builders and churn-and-burn experts plenty of time to rake in big profits before Penguin takes them down.

As one who now "mostly" makes spam sites for google, this is not quite true. My rank and bank type sites do better during these updates. For the possibly 10% that "may" get hurt, the other 90% seem to always improve. This latest update no different, profits rising quite a bit with zero sites hurt so far.

I feel sorry for you guys trying to build what you think are legit sites and getting burned by google, been there done that but learned from my mistakes.

The only thing I can say to help is, dont build sites that YOU or some other SEO think are good, build sites that googles algo thinks has great content and links, there is a big difference if you want to make money.

Mod's note: Fixed link and changed to original source.

John Mueller knows that people are waiting, but estimates probably a few weeks, not too much longer.... 'As always, these kinds of time frames are very hard to judge, because we do a lot of testing towards the end, and we need to make sure things are working right before releasing these kinds of changes.'

That means November 11 or 27 (Veteran / Thanksgiving day).

They prefer such periods, then the impact is much lower.

My guess is sometime after Cyber Monday. Many small mom and pops will likely miss another major online shopping holiday.

And again this week, no penguin. Maybe they can't find the little fellow...

Maybe they can't find the little fellow...

It could be it's a male stuck on an egg in Antarctica:

Breeds during the Antarctic winter from March to December... The male is solely responsible for the two-month incubation of the egg during the heart of winter in almost continuous darkness. If the female has not returned by the time of hatching, the male is able to feed the chick for a short time with a “milk” secreted from the oesophagus.

There are huge fluctuations in rankings in all the niches we’re watching.
Not sure what but something definitely happened (is happening) the last few hours…

I think it has started. There's one site I've been watching (a vendor of a client's) that was most definitely Penguined, and it's taken a jump. Also some rumblings on Twitter about recoveries. No hits yet.

After the initial fluctuations everything went quiet, very little movement at present.

I was super penalized on one of my sites from Penguin since its implementation, right now this same site is at one of the lowest total daily visitor rates in a long time... we did get a notice 5 months ago that a manual penalty was removed... and since then we have seen steady but slow increases in monthly total visitors for the past 5 months... we also sent in a huge disavow file about 7 months ago (about 3500 links)... I'm really hoping the past months of fixing and almost a hundred stories we have published will pay off if in fact Penguin is going through soon/today/etc... it's very quiet today(visits), no idea what to feel or think... right now I feel like I'm writing a darn novel here lol... so so so crossing my fingers at the moment...

Yep, I have to agree I'm seeing some movement. I hope Google will comment on whether or not the Disavow data is being used, or if it was just a big waste of time.

While disavow may release the penalty, by itself it may not suffice to restore rankings.

I'm really hoping the past months of fixing and almost a hundred stories we have published will pay off if in fact Penguin is going through soon/today/etc.

You were wise to have done this, Hollywood. I'm assuming you've also taken steps to create buzz/ traffic/ awareness... whatever it takes to pull in some good trusted links. Please keep us posted, and good luck.

I hope Google will comment on whether or not the Disavow data is being used, or if it was just a big waste of time.

I think effectively they have suggested that disavow data is still in play, by noting a cutoff date for disavow for this particular update. As rbarker posted earlier in this thread...

Gary also said that if you disavow bad links now or as of about two weeks ago, it will likely be too late for this next Penguin refresh. But Gary added that the Penguin refreshes will be more frequent because of the new algorithm in place.

Important thing, I'll emphasize again, is that except in special cases, it's likely that disavow by itself will not be enough. If your site was ranking on the basis of penalized links, you need also to improve the site to acquire links to replace those lost.

In my Sept 10, 2014 comments in this thread, I noted that John Mueller not only said as much, but also strongly hinted that various types of improvements might help release you before the update...

Google confirms Penguin recovery requires algorithm refresh
http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/4700685.htm [webmasterworld.com]

Well, the update time is here. Whether you're happy about where you rank may depend a lot on what else you did besides disavow.

Yes sir, doing at ton of everything lol. Not sure if Penguin is landing on all data centers and if it has indeed been confirmed still but so far I have terms both up and down, it's so far a wash for me, so far. So at least so far no complaints and I am happy I am done dropping as lately we have a slow rise steadily over the past 5 months.

Google SEO 1.0 worked well for a while but it was bound to catch up with us webmasters and it did. So still on correction and build mode. Will still cross my fingers I get a little bit more of a bone though... ;)
