Note: I am not a SEO expert, I just have original content & regular updates!

Well, 3 years ago I had two blogs and they were at the top on the Google Search Engine within 1-2 months (Niche specific). 1 of the website had approx. 90,000 alexa rank. Isn't it too high? It took me about 4-5 months to reach 90,000 (approx.) alexa rank. I didn't knew anything about SEO or backlinks at that time. I never used any tool or paid to get my website on no.1 on Google.

So, how did my website get high rank in short time?

Answer is simple- Original content + Daily/Weekly updates!

Also, I never had any backlinks from .gov or .edu websites. It's just a myth that .edu backlinks are strongest. If your website is regular & original, it will surely get high rank!

I manually advertised about my website on several forums, blogs. They all were related to my niche. I had no clue about dofollow & nofollow backlinks at that time. The visitors themselves created backlinks for my website by sharing on websites, social network etc.

I've created this blog today (4 September 2014) and I'm going to update it weekly. I will try to top the Google ranking again. I will post daily/weekly statistics of my blog. Everything- where I advertised, no. of daily visitors. I will do same thing that I've done earlier.

Starting this journey to the top by submitting the website to the Google- [google.com...]

Google does tend to treat freshly updated content differently from old content that is never touched. IMHO most of the times it is for the better but sometimes it is for the worse. If you start refreshing your old content and play around with the anchor text of your backlinks, you might not be happy.

Why is that? I've been reviewing old content and improving it.

As for new content, I've added tonnes, and still been hit. My friend (and competitor) has by her own admission not updated any content in years, she's enjoying a huge boost in rankings right now.

I guess I need to work on my manual advertising.

New content often has very few or no backlinks and that is not a good thing.

Also simply being new content is not good enough. You need quality content that can rise above the article spinning programs that are churning out thousands of pages. Don't create content for Googlebot. Create content that consumers searching on Google want and can't find elsewhere. Also you might want to revisit your editorial guidelines to make sure it is the right length & reading level for your audience. If you create good content AND promote it to your users, they can help spread it through social media/email/forums and this can lead to ranking signals that Google looks for.

Simply creating great fresh content is not good enough. If I built a 5 star hotel in the jungle with no roads leading to it and never told anyone about, I shouldn't be surprised when no one visits my 5 star hotel.

I'll tell you how. You picked a niche that has no competition. It's easy to be #1 if there's no competition. Your existence is enough.

When someone ranks on 'las vegas hotels' or 'mortgage rates' using the factors described here, then I'll pay attention. Until then, links are still the way to rank in Google.

I agree that links are the way to rank in Google but it tends to be easier to get links for good content.
