One would think that links from Pinterest would be very valuable. Our site has over 500000 of them to all different pages.. Can this hurt rankings?

Doubt they mean much to google either way. Social links are cheap.

@dethfire then why are Pinterest pages doing so well in the SERPs? In fact some Pins do well also.

I imagine it is because lots of people really like pinterest in general, and that helps them rank well.

Pintereest in general probably has a bazillion natural backlinks and probably whatever user data google acquires from usage stats shows that people like it a lot.

This is a good question. Pinterest pages shouldn't rank at all. It is duplicate content, photos copied from other websites.

I feel that they are very valuable. Not for the weight that they may or may not have, but the offsetting of other links. Also, I have had weighty links because of my Pinterest pins/links from newspapers and magazines etc. They are worth having in my opinion

I have spent a huge amount of time on Pinterest the last year. I am convinced they are getting more play in the Google algo. However, they are a major Google search competitor, there will be a ceiling on links value. No way Google will allow them to flourish in the GINDEX. (google index)

Wrong! Site has been muffed up to be a blaze in the sky by reports, tech blogs, mom and sis, etc. So YES it has value...

IN THOSE SAME AREAS..

Which for most of us mean doobly squat. Secondly, there's no way to TARGET pintrest that I know of, thus is less useful than #*$! on a boar hog.

Pick and chose your battles, kiddies. Pintrest is ... not the Alamo in interest, or Leyte Gulf in historical necessity. About 95% of pintrest is picture theft... Go from there as to whether you want to promote it.
