301 Redirected Subdomain is Penalized - But How?

Working with someone who got hit with link injection spam - we cleaned it up (ok, their people SAY they cleaned it up...) and got a message from The Googs that the reconsideration had been processed and we were good.

Well the same site has a www subdomain with a separate Webmaster Tools account; that account got a message yesterday that it's facing manual action if it doesn't get its life together.

How can this be if the subdomain is redirected to the aforementioned healthy domain?

Not sure I am understanding this correctly. Why did they create a separate WMT account for a 301 redirect?

it looks like spammy links are leading to www. version of the domain as well.

did you have 301 redirect before the penalty?
