[themoralconcept.net...]

When a webmaster argues to Google that he/she has their own limitations, that they simply cannot afford the $5k per month ridiculous marketing budget to buy advertising and magazine level content for their plumbing business, and instead had to go the $500 per month buying links route to compete in their chosen niche because that’s the money they had, and that’s what everyone else had done, these limitations do not morally indemnify the “black hatter” in Google’s eyes...

> Better yet, two versions of Google.

I totally agree. The engine should have a 3 radio box below the search box:
mode: O Research O Shopping O Both

Good idea. And if "Both" were the default, nothing would change for people who were happy with the status quo or didn't want to bother choosing. Searchers wouldn't have to learn anything new unless they wanted to.

Well, I just did a site: operator search of the "Shopping" section on Google and, as expected, nothing from my main site shows up. It's an information site so things are as they should be. On the other hand, the "Web" part of the search engine (not necessarily a site: search) shows my site's pages and every other thing on planet earth including shopping results (not that that's news to anyone).

In actuality, the solution is already in place but just hasn't been implemented. We've got "Web" which is everything pretty much, "Shopping" which doesn't include information sites apparently. All we need is the "Research" option which should include what isn't appropriate in the "Shopping" area. Seems they've already made the distinction in one direction. Should actually be a simple matter to implement the other side of the equation. Also seems that doing so would make people who are searching happier (not to mention webmasters).

I'm fairly certain that the research pages would offer ample advertising opportunities for Google as well, even when people aren't in shopping mode (adverts for research sites such as major genealogy sites or information providers such as news sites). Might make the advertisers happier as well (better targeting for those trying to attract information seekers or shoppers, whichever the case may be). Just fantasizing here as a big thunderstorm rolls in.

Um. Google Shopping is for paid listings, run through AdWords. Nothing from your site will show up unless you submit a feed and create a PPC campaign for it.

netmeg -- thanks for that clarification. It's probably the first time I've clicked on that link in several years, so, in the words of Gilda Radner; "Never mind" that point. ;) Still, it's sort of the commercial side some have mentioned above, in some obtuse way anyway.
