impact of redirecting from .net to .com?

About 14 years ago I registered a .com address. The company I registered the domain made it very difficult for me to transfer the domain to another host, so in preparation to launch, I grabbed the .net domain. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this would become the domain that google indexed, even when I got the .com back.

I would really rather the site be known as .com.

As I prepare to launch an updated site where I had to change the structure, will the search engines go completely mad if I add redirects to the .com address? All of my social media links and referral sites link to .net. Is it even worth it? Or should I continue to brand myself as .com even though anyone who were to manually type in the address would end up on my .net domain?

Thoughts?

You are thinking of moving to .com AND doing a site redesign at the same time?

I would personally just keep the site on the .net domain and redirect the .com domain name to the .net domain.

Yes, redesign and thinking about moving to .com.

I've been nervous about redirecting to .com, so I think I'll just stay.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
