Wordpress hacked - site now seems penalized on long tail traffic

About a month ago I noticed that all of my Wordpress posts had a string of spam urls - online casino, pharmaceuticals, etc.

The amount of traffic I've been receiving from Google has remained consistent over the last 6 months but the sources of that traffic has changed.

Where most of my traffic was coming from long tail queries it is now coming from just a few, but competitive, image queries (that have nothing to do with the content of my blog. These are single posts that mention the image subject in file name and post title only.) My long tail traffic (on topic) is gone.

Where previously I would have been number one for the long tail queries I am now in the hundreds.

I imagine most Wordpress bloggers are aware of that exploit in previous versions of the CMS, I don't know anyone in a situation similar to this. Has anyone else heard of this happening?

I think the two things may not be connected. There are others reporting the loss of long-tail traffic even while keeping the short terms. See Google.com SERP Changes - July 2008 [webmasterworld.com]

Recovery from a Wordpress hack has usually been a matter of days, according to the reports we see here.

Thanks Tedster. I think I found some clues in that post.
