Will bad backlinks penalize my entire site, or just the target page?

I've read many threads here but never posted. Can you tell me if backlinks that bring penalty will penalize the entire site or just linked to page?

The reason I ask is that in between work and all I've very slowly been building my site (only 60 pages so far). Some of the pages, including index have rankings of 3 and place high in the serps for my niche keyword phrases. I've been careful about getting links from quality sites.

The problem is I want to bring a lot of traffic fast to a sale page on my site. Am I risking losing what I've built or just losing good ranking on this one page (which I woudn't want to do but it is just one page).

Welcome out of lurker mode, Kahina!

The surest troubles come from who your site links out to, not what sites link to yours. Google may be changing on this score in the area of paid links - but they need to be careful, since your competition could always point bad links at your site if they thought Google would penalize you for it.

Google can penalize just one page, or a direcory, or an entire domain. They also say they can also ignore just one link on a page if they suspect it is a violation of their guidleines. This is much more the risk you take - spending resources in getting links placed that Google just ignores at some point. That's not a true penalty, but it might feel like one.

You have to go some to actually acquire a penalty so I'd doubt it would only be restricted to a particular page....
