Site not listed number one in "www.example.com" search

Hello. I recently did a search in G for one of my websites in quotes ie "www.mysite.com" and found that the site index is listed about 60th in the results.

The website has healthy pr and links to it and was cached on april 14, 2006.

What could be the causes of this. I have a 301 redirect in place (tested using a head checker) since Sept 2005 from the non www to www.

This site has much difficulty ranking, while other websites I have that show the homepage first the same search, are ranking well.

Any comments appreciated.

Are you by any chance not serving a page directly at www.example.com, but redirecting to a longer url in some way?

Hello tedster. I am not redirecting in any manner at all except for the 301 redirect from http:// to [www...] which seems to work correctly and fine.

I found this phenomenon in a rare search for my own url for another site, and thought I would try it for my own.

I just checked my site by punching in www.example.com and it is no where to be found?...zero results. If i use site:www.example.com I only get a few ancient supplimental pages from my site listed.
