Importance of the Subhead in Google News

When writing newspaper headlines for optimal Google News ranking, how important is the sub-header? It doesn't get seen in the results, but is the g-news algo giving any special weight to the keywords in the subheader?

Can we look at a newspaper subheader the same way we look at a meta <description> tag? That is, something with negligible value in terms of SEO, but nice to have in case the serps decide to display it?

What's the latest thought on this? Thanks :)

The way the G-News algo works is pretty closely held information, I think. What are you seeing? Does a sub-head help? I would think it does, and more than a meta description.
