Jumping Rankings

I am very confused and wondered if you could help:

Our website's rankings for a particular keyword are jumping all over the place.

Eg last week it was #7 on page 1 of Google for the keyword in question and now it is on page 3.

This is surely not just a matter of "natural ranking movements"?

We have been building links to this page using the keyword in the anchor text, I have ensured that there is a link to it on the home page (again using relevant anchor text), the title has the keyword at the very beginning etc etc and yet still our rankings are all over the place.

Any ideas/suggestions?

my rankings are jumping from left to right >> then back again << when i refresh my browser, i can see this may be a problem of my hardware or software or there may be someone at googles end moving it around. what do you think?

Could the jumping around be the result of connecting to a different DC each time you do the query?

I've seen this when doing a SITE:MYSITE.COM listing.. first result shows hundreds of pages, search again, then it's 10 pages, search again 5 seconds later and it's more than the first time, etc..

I think there's still a lot of BD "setteling-ing" going on..

or, maybe i'm wrong?

There is considerable movement on DC's. I have had the same default DC for some 10 days or so, and one of my keyphrases has moved from position 4 to 34 and today it's at 12.

I guess there will always be movement, as new pages appear, old ones disappear, and of course, page rank changes more often than we see on the toolbar.

FWIW the same happens on MSN and Yahoo.
