Sandbox doesnt mean it wont show your site, it just doesnt return in the results if YOU MAIN keyword/phrase is used in a search, with a new site aim at longtail search phrases instead, theres plenty of traffic down there.
Example: you build a site for WIDGETS, you seo your new site the best you can, but you have many pages with green widgets, yellow widgets etc, once in the index you will get traffic mainly if the phrase is on your site, like "green widgets with yellow stripes" or "bent yellow and green widgets" but you wont get any traffic for "widgets" "yellow widgets" or "green widgets", as thats what your targeting.
In the meantime, dont wait, keep adding content and getting IBL's with different anchor text and from ON theme sites, dont just link for the sake of it, its better to have 10 on theme links than 100 non theme, this time next year you'll be happy

Isn't this the same thing? Search engines are supposed to find relevant sites. If they cannot find new sites for their subject matter then they can be considered to be missing from the results.
The sandbox seems to let pages with non-competative keywords out right away, slightly more competative phrases later, and the most competative last.
